April Notes from the Medical Staff Vice President

Laura Pollauf, MD, Vice President, Medical Staff and Director, Division of Emergency Medicine

While Dr. White is in Europe enjoying a well-deserved vacation, it is my pleasure to present to the medical staff an update on activities for April.  With Dr. White’s term as President of the Medical Staff winding down over this next quarter, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank him for his mentorship during these past 2 years as I have served as Medical Staff Vice President.

All members of the medical staff will have the opportunity to participate in the selection of the next president-elect.  The nominating committee is happy to announce three candidates for the office of vice president: Dr. Michael Forbes, Dr. Troy Sands and Dr. Tsulee Chen. Look for an email from the Medical Staff office the first week of May inviting all members to submit their electronic ballot through Survey Monkey. Thank you in advance for participating in this very important election.

The April activities of the Medical Staff Executive Committee included approving the addition of 7 new members to our active staff.  The MSEC also approved the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Pediatric Urology Privilege Delineation form and adjustments to the privileging documents for Primary Care Pediatrics and Department of Pathology.

Our Department of Pediatrics Chairman, Dr. Norm Christopher, along with Dr. Dean Timmons, hosted a luncheon for over 30 senior pediatric leaders from throughout Northern Ohio. Dr. Christopher along with hospital and medical staff leadership shared their thoughts about the role that Akron Children’s Hospital plays in our community, partnering with providers to improve the health and well-being of children throughout the region. The afternoon included a research update from Dr. Mary Toth, our past president, as well as a facility tour.

On April 27 Akron Children’s participated in a 4-hour Northeast Central Ohio (NECO) Regional exercise, which is an annual disaster drill, with both Akron and Mahoning Valley Campuses participating. This regional exercise focused on the response to an incident that could impact the entire region. The exercise involved 43 hospitals, 23 public health departments and 9 emergency management agencies. This exercise, conducted each year, helps to satisfy our CMS and Joint Commission standards for creating and testing our emergency operation plans. Thank you to all medical staff that participated in this exercise.

This week, Dr. Bird, Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety, sent an email to all medical staff that provide direct patient care requesting the completion of the 2017 Patient Safety Culture Survey. This was sent via Survey Monkey with a message from Mr. Considine.  The goal of the survey is to gather data about the current patient safety environment at Akron Children’s. Please take time to complete this survey, which takes only 10 minutes. The deadline for completion is May 8. Medical staff input is essential to help guide our patient safety initiatives. Thank you in advance for your support and participation.
