APP April Update: New APP educator, boot camp

Julie Tsirambidis
Director of Advanced Practice

Hello and welcome to spring! The APP Center is hard at work for your APRN and PA practice needs. We recently sent out a TALEO module on the new licensing process in Ohio and advances that HB 216 brought to our state. Please ensure this is completed by the deadline.

Laura Abels is new APP educator
In February, we officially welcomed our APP educator, Laura Abels, BA, MSN, RN, CNS-BC, APHN-BC. This is a part-time position within the APP Center, designed to oversee all APRN and PA education activities in conjunction with the APP director. Laura is taking on many of the responsibilities the director was overseeing, including our CE/CME programs, on-boarding projects, boot camps, mandatory programs, and orientation pathways in collaboration with hospital divisions and our medical staff office and credentialing committees.

Laura is a child and adolescent psychiatric clinical nurse specialist and advanced practice holistic nurse who has worked in outpatient psychiatry at Akron Children’s for the past 3 years. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Kent State University, her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Akron, and her Master of Science in Nursing from Kent State University. Laura is currently a Doctor of Nursing Practice student at Otterbein University. Her special interests include wellness initiatives for mental health and the integration of holistic nursing practices.

She is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, American Holistic Nurses Association, and Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses.

Laura jumped right in this past month assisting in the first pilot program for boot camp on-boarding in our newly designed Immersion Boot Camp. On March 7 and 8, the first in a series of 4 boot camps planned for 2017 was held. These boot camps consist of 2 days of didactic education, spearheaded by Leah Rawdon, CPNP, Hospital Medicine, and Shawnelle Contini, PA-C, NeuroDevelopmental Science Center. Two additional days of simulation (SIM) will be offered in June and December at the Austen Bioinnovation Institute, spearheaded by Jackie Pressman, CPNP, Hospital Medicine, and chair of APP simulation. Fifteen advanced practice providers hired in the final quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017 completed the inaugural, 2-day boot camp. This cohort will attend the SIM experience on June 16.

New boot camp series launches
Our new advanced practice providers had the opportunity to meet with medical staff and hospital leadership during the boot camp, including Dr. Laura Pollauf, Dr. P. Cooper White, Lisa Aurilio, Cindy Dormo, Linda Hetson and Craig McGhee. As the director of the APP Center, I opened the boot camp with education on role transition for the novice APP, and was joined by APP leads and committee chairs as an introduction to our leadership.

Didactic presentations included information on Akron Children’s organizational structure, billing/coding, maintenance of licensure, credentialing, OPPE/FPPE evaluations, medical staff privileges and our Professional Advancement Model. Clinical education included XWeb and EPIC tutorials, as well as content on managing shock, respiratory distress, Medical Response Team (MRT)/code response, and the use of the mental model for collaboration and communication with an interdisciplinary medical team.

Pre-boot camp data was collected to assess baseline knowledge and comfort in the areas represented by the didactic presentations, followed by a post-boot camp evaluation to assess areas of improved knowledge and to determine if the presentations met attendees’ needs. Feedback was positive. In 9 areas, attendees indicated improved understanding or increased comfort. Limitations in the quality of the data included limited participation in the pre-evaluation process (n=10) and significant variance in the amount of time between date of hire and completion of boot camp.

The second APP boot camp for 2017 will begin June 14 and 15 with didactic presentations, followed by a full day of simulation at the Austen Bioinnovation Institute on June 16. Invitations will be extended to advanced practice providers hired in the first and second quarters of 2017.

If you have any questions, Laura can be reached directly at 330-543-5059 or via the APP Center at 330-543-4780. Her email is labels@chmca.org.

Next month, look for information on our APP credentialing process.
