Evaluating and managing pediatric overuse sports injuries

overusePrimary care physicians are no strangers to patients with overuse sports injuries. In a recent Grand Rounds presentation, Troy Smurawa, MD, the director of sports medicine education at Akron Children’s Hospital, offered his insight into the proper evaluation and management of these common injuries, including:

  • Identifying the physiology that renders pediatric athletes vulnerable to particular injuries
  • Differentiating between juvenile and adolescent sports overuse injuries
  • Performing a musculoskeletal exam within the well visit and assessing patient sports overuse injuries in a more systematic way than previously by taking a focused history
