Hearing loss is the No. 1 birth defect in America, yet only half of affected infants have a known risk factor, such as illness or family history. Because the detrimental effects of late-identified hearing loss are well documented, all 50 states screen for hearing loss at birth.

Pediatric Guidelines for DXA Scans, Treating Vitamin D Deficiency

An increasing number of children are at risk for osteomalacia and osteoporosis. Although many cases are due to inadequate levels of vitamin D, others may be at risk because of medical conditions or chronic use of medications. In response, Akron Children’s bone health team has developed guidelines for ordering and using DXA scans, along with guidelines for the evaluation, treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency.
