Getting better, by committee

Thank you to all of you who have volunteered to serve on Medical Staff committees for the 2014-15 year. You will receive letters regarding your committee assignments by the end of the month.

Medical Staff committees are important for developing policies that impact the quality of care we provide, as well as peer review activities including credentialing and performance improvement. The scope of these activities requires many participants, so your involvement is truly appreciated.

At the last Medical Staff Executive Committee meeting, we approved many things: the Graduate Medical Education mission statement; new members and new and revised privileges; reappointment and biennial review for approximately 25% of the medical staff; and changes to delineation of privileges for cardiovascular surgeons, hospitalists and primary care pediatrics. We also received updates on the Department of Pediatrics review and bylaws changes.

Please come to the Annual Meeting on June 25. It is a great opportunity to visit and network with your colleagues at the social afterward. We have a live satellite feed at our Beeghly campus in Boardman for those who are unable to come to the main campus.

BLS policy

There have been some questions surrounding the Basic Life Support (BLS) requirement. This requirement applies to all medical staff (employed and private practice) effective Jan. 1, 2015.

If you would like to take the course at Akron Children’s, register at http://eregistrar.chmca.org/. If you don’t have a log in, contact the service desk or department manager.

  • Select the “Event Calendar” link on the left side of the screen.
  • Select “Sort by title.” When all the courses are sorted, scroll down until you see: AHA-BLS (CPR) HeartCode Skill Session
  • Select the 1 Hour session on the date you want
  • One month prior to the skill session, you will receive an email from me with instructions on how to complete the 1 hour precourse work.

Bring the certificate of completion to the Skills Session and do your test off with an instructor.
