MyChart features auto-release of test results

MyChart is a secure online portal that allows patients to access personal medical information (i.e., test results, medication lists and immunization records), as well as request appointments. In October, Akron Children’s Hospital enabled the automatic release of information through MyChart, a secure Web portal that gives patients access to their personal health records.

This means that certain information, such as test results, will go directly to patients’ MyChart accounts, enabling faster and more dependable access for patients.

In certain instances, patients may access their information before providers have had a chance to review it. This doesn’t apply to sensitive results or information, such as for STDs, pregnancy and drugs of abuse, to name a few.

Below is a chart of the release schedule by result type.

“It’s up to all of us [providers] to set clear expectations of the advantages and functionality of this new feature for our patients,” said Dr. Amy Maneker, chief medical information officer at Akron Children’s. “For our providers, it can start with a different conversation in the exam room where the provider can set expectations that results will be available in MyChart, what the results might say and how questions can or will be addressed.”

Patient engagement through MyChart is on the upswing at Akron Children’s. Thousands of patients have enrolled since January, and an increasing number are actively using it.
